History
The modern Turkish Navy has a total of 12 submarines in its fleet, 4 of which are of the Preveze class, built to the German "Type 209" standard (see elsewhere on this page). The popular, compact and efficient Type 209 was designed in the 1960s and entered service in 1971 with 61 of 64 planned. These later served various global clients, currently including Turkey.
The TCG Preveze (S-353) is the lead ship in this class, commissioned into active duty in 1994 and continues in that role today (2019).
More specifically, the Preveze class is based on the Type 209/1400 variant of the Type 209 series.
TCG Preveze (S-353) natively supports the UGM-84 Sub-Harpoon anti-ship missile system, augmenting the existing 8 x 21 in (533 mm) torpedo tubes (which natively support the marking 24 Tigerfish or DM2A4 "SeaHake mod 4" torpedo line), which is already carried (up to 14 reloads). The dimensions of the boat include a barrel length of 211 feet, a beam of 21 feet and a draft of 20 feet. Propulsion is via a conventional diesel-electric arrangement, with four diesel units and battery storage developing over 6,000 hp to 1 x axle stern. Performance includes surface speeds of 11.5 knots and underwater speeds of nearly 23 knots. The range is up to 11,000 nautical miles, which gives the boat good endurance.
The ship has a crew of 36 and supplies enough to sail at sea for about 50 days.
