History of USS San Jacinto (CVL-30)

The USS San Jacinto (CVL-30) of the United States Navy was an Independence-class light aircraft carrier that served during World War II. It is named after the Battle of San Jacinto during the Texas Revolution. Former U.S. President George H.W. Bush served on this ship during World War II.

Deployments in World War II

She joined the Pacific Fleet in time for combat operations in Operation Mariana and the Battle of the Philippine Sea. During the summer months, their aircraft helped attack targets in Palau, Bonin and the Caroline Islands.

She then began to personally participate in raids on Taiwan, Okinawa and the Philippines. She will also take part in the naval battle of Leyte Gulf. After the battle, she was one of the groups that continued to put pressure on the Japanese army by launching attacks in the Western Pacific, South China Sea and other strategic locations.

In early 1945, San Jacinto planes launched airstrikes on them on two separate occasions, bringing the war back to the Japanese mainland. However, she also assisted in the invasion of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. After Okinawa, she spent the next three months at sea battling suicide planes.

She also helped destroy the wreckage of Japanese surface ships during World War II. After completing this mission, she again attacked targets within Japan and remained in the area until the final days of the war.

After the war

San Jacinto returned to the United States shortly after the end of World War II. After returning to the United States, she remained relatively inactive, eventually retiring in March 1947. As part of the reserve fleet, she received a new life and hull and was converted into an air transport.

However, she never made it out of the trunk and was scrapped in December 1971, ending the life of an aircraft carrier that was originally a light cruiser.
