History
The USS Alamance (AKA-75) was a United States Navy Tolland-class attack cargo ship named for Alamance County, North Carolina. Like all AKAs, the Alamance is designed to carry military cargo and landing craft, which are used to land weapons, supplies and soldiers or marines on enemy shores during amphibious operations.
She served on a contract ship for 18 months.
USS Alamance was laid as C2-S-AJ3 ship by the North Carolina Shipbuilding Company under a Maritime Commission contract (MC Hull 1405) at Wilmington, NC on September 15, 1944; November 11, 1944 Launched; sponsored by Mrs. Carl T. Durham; acquired by the Navy on December 22, 1944; and commissioned the same day, Comdr.
