OD/82 HE/SE

History

The OD/82 was used by the Italian Army as a standard infantry fragmentation grenade in 1982. In practice, it showed a tendency to detonate early, causing the type to be withdrawn and modified for safety reasons before being reintroduced. Externally, it looks and functions identically to other grenades in the world, most notably for its ribbed casing and removable safety features.

As a fragmentation grenade, it was designed to damage and concussion targets from cover, and the shell exploded into fragments and was thrown into the blast radius.

The total weight of each shell is 0.286 kg and its filling is composition B. The lethality of the blast radius is about 50 feet. Lightweight and portable, the OD/82 expands the tactical capabilities of Italian warfighters.

The basic HE version was designated OD/82-HE, the improved version with its new safety device was designated OD/82-SE. The reusable practice grenade became the OD/82-E-1.
