The story of Maadi Helwan
The Egyptian Armed Forces signed a contract with Beretta for a Model 1951 semi-automatic pistol. It was the company's first locking breech pistol design and was favored by many. Power and accuracy when firing 9x19mm Parabellum pistol cartridges.
Beretta agreed and sold the 1951 model in a "second series" production run, complete with Egyptian national emblems. It worked well, especially in the conditions encountered throughout Egypt, so the "Third Series" barrel was followed by an extended slide to improve accuracy and modify the sights.
This model was created by Beretta in 1955.
Later, Maadi in Egypt obtained a local license to produce the design, which resulted in the "Helwan" shape. It retains most of the form and function of the Italian model, including a short recoil internal system with recoil operation with locking recoil.
Eight rounds are drawn from a spring-loaded detachable magazine mounted on the bottom of the grip, consisting of 9x19mm Parabellum cartridges. Sights were identified fore and aft above the slide for long-range precision shooting.
The original form included a lightweight alloy in its construction, but it was replaced by steel when it was determined that the alloy was not strong enough to withstand military abuse.
Helwan no longer serves on the front lines.
