The Story of Port Said

The Port Said submachine gun is nothing but an Egyptian replica of the Swedish Carl Gustaf m/45 SMG series, locally produced and licensed. The original gun appeared in Sweden after World War II (1939-1945) battles (based on Bergman's MP18 and MP35 models), and eventually found a few customers worldwide - including the United States, where it entered service during the Vietnam conflict ( 1955-1975). Through the supply and training of the necessary tools, the Egyptians received adequate support for local production.

This version is faithful to the Swedish model in both form and function.

The submachine gun is loaded with the widely used 9x19mm Parabellum pistol cartridge, fired from a straight, detachable 36 or 50 round magazine. The magazine is deployed before the trigger group. A simple handle is mounted behind the trigger. In size, this weapon is compact, allowing troops to carry it into tight spaces (hence its use by Americans for jungle warfare). The stock is folded line to further increase the portability of the weapon.

Inside, a blowback operating system is employed, and firing is limited to fully automatic fire.

Simple, sturdy, reliable and effective, Port Said and its close relatives are revered weapons - some are still in use today (2016).

A simpler production version from the 1970s was called "Maadi Akaba". This form removes the barrel sheath and shortens the barrel itself to save weight, but sacrifices range and accuracy. The retractable line shoulder rest also replaces the original fold line.

The functionality of the weapon remains largely unchanged.
