History
HS Product HS2000 was originally developed for the Croatian army and police forces who were looking for a high quality and reliable semi-automatic pistol of local design and production. Introduced in 1999 as the 9x19mm Parabellum, this pistol has since been widely exported to interested military and law enforcement customers around the world. Its sales in the European and American civilian markets further boosted its popularity.
In the US market, the pistol is known as the Springfield Armory XD ("XD-9" = "Extreme Duty, 9mm") and is marketed under the Springfield Armory, Incorporated brand (since 2002). It was originally brought to the United States by HSArica in 2000. The design of the HS2000 is credited to Marko Vukovic.
The core of the HS2000 is designed for the proven short recoil common to many modern semi-automatic pistols. The pistol has an all-metal slide on the textured polymer lower frame. Both the pistol grip and trigger assembly are integrated into the design. The weapon has a grip safety device (on the back of the grip) and also has no less than three other safety mechanisms to prevent accidental discharge.
Later production models introduced external thumb safety on the frame itself. The spring-loaded magazine is located at the bottom of the pistol grip as usual, and a small section at the rear of the breech is ribbed for better grip on the breech itself. Textured frame provides a firmer grip with the main hand. Aiming is via a standard fixed array with optional illuminated night vision goggles.
The accessory bracket is mounted on the front of the trigger unit.
